description
The discerning traveller wants choice in the range of luxury accommodation offered to them - choice between hosted stays, self-contained and full-service luxury lodges.
New Zealand's hosted city, country, beach and off-the-beaten-track stays offer a bed and breakfast service and the opportunity to get to know the Kiwi characer at close quarters. This is what distinguishes hosted accommodation from the many motels and hotels - our host's interest in and sensitivity to the needs of their guests. Always, our hosts will give of themselves and share their way of life as well as sharing their home.
Self-contained cottages, vacation apartments and holiday homes, whether in the city or country, offer the opportunity to get away for a while - to recover from or prepare for the rigours of travel, or to just relax and soak up some sun or culture.
And when it is time to luxuriate in a full-service, boutique resort, Friars Guide properties offer some of the highest standards of service available in New Zealand.
Other accommodation guides have come and gone, but Friars has been consistently successful for four reasons. First is the size and quality of the images. Second is the volume of comprehensive and informative text. Third is the use of an objective writing style where marketing puffery and superlatives are not used everywhere. Fourth is the personal recommendation of the authors which is based on a personal visit to each property - if it does not meet our minimum standards for location, building, services and amenities, and delightful hosting, then it is not accepted for inclusion in Friars Guide.

remote beaches plus history and culture
Located on the Pacific east coast of the North Island, Eastland is a region of stunning coastal scenery that is rich in the history of early Mäori and European settlement. Mäori had occupied the area for perhaps 1,000 years prior to Captain James Cook in the "Endeavour" landing at Cook's Cove in 1769. When Cook left, he named the area Poverty Bay, because "…it afforded us not one thing we wanted." Today's traveller finds plenty to do and see in this stunning region. Drive north on the Pacific Coast highway (SH35) and follow a long coastline of safe, sandy beaches and rocky points that are ideal for swimming, fishing, boating, or diving. Heading inland, the Waioeka Gorge (SH2) offers many opportunities for trout fishing and hunting, rafting, kayaking and jet-boating. And Lake Waikaremoana, a scenic gem in the majestic Te Urewera National Park has great opportunities for walks and nature tours. Gisborne, and first city in the world to see each day’s sunrise, offers good shopping, museums and a wine trail. On the coastal route to Opotiki, Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay are rich in culture and history. A giant pohutukawa tree, reputed to be our oldest and largest, is at Te Araroa that is only 21km from East Cape where a climb of about 500 steps leads to the most eastern lighthouse in the country.
