Nelson is one of the top destinations in New Zealand for explorers of the outdoors because of its combination of city treats, high sunshine hours and a compact geography that puts most activities of the wider region within a one to two-hour drive. The city area stretches from the Maitai Valley to the rich horticultural lands of Richmond in the south and Wakapuaka in the north. Within walking access of the caf�s, shops and cathedral of the city is the Centre of New Zealand lookout, Tahunanui Beach and the Nelson Port area. Further out are the World of Wearable Arts complex and vineyards and there are many action adventure activities to sample. The Nelson arts industry actively promotes its many artisans and cultural experiences with a wide range of short courses. Within easy driving distances are three diverse national parks - Abel Tasman with its beaches and water views, Kahurangi with native forest walking tracks and the sub-alpine Nelson Lakes National Park. The wider Tasman region offers an enormous diversity of activities and sights, from snow-capped mountains and ski fields, apple orchards and vineyards, to the golden-sand beaches of Tasman and Golden Bays.
