description
The discerning traveller wants choice in the range of luxury accommodation offered to them - choice between hosted stays, self-contained and full-service luxury lodges.
New Zealand's hosted city, country, beach and off-the-beaten-track stays offer a bed and breakfast service and the opportunity to get to know the Kiwi characer at close quarters. This is what distinguishes hosted accommodation from the many motels and hotels - our host's interest in and sensitivity to the needs of their guests. Always, our hosts will give of themselves and share their way of life as well as sharing their home.
Self-contained cottages, vacation apartments and holiday homes, whether in the city or country, offer the opportunity to get away for a while - to recover from or prepare for the rigours of travel, or to just relax and soak up some sun or culture.
And when it is time to luxuriate in a full-service, boutique resort, Friars Guide properties offer some of the highest standards of service available in New Zealand.
Other accommodation guides have come and gone, but Friars has been consistently successful for four reasons. First is the size and quality of the images. Second is the volume of comprehensive and informative text. Third is the use of an objective writing style where marketing puffery and superlatives are not used everywhere. Fourth is the personal recommendation of the authors which is based on a personal visit to each property - if it does not meet our minimum standards for location, building, services and amenities, and delightful hosting, then it is not accepted for inclusion in Friars Guide.

Maori culture and active geothermals
Rotorua, the tourism capital of New Zealand and cultural heart of Maoridom, offers visitors a huge range of adventure, rejuvenation and cultural experiences within a very small area. Located in the Bay of Plenty, two hours from Auckland, Rotorua's Te Arawa people have been guiding visitors through their geothermal backyard for more than 160 years. The characteristic sulphur smell of Rotorua is evident from the moment people arrive, although just a few minutes away from the central city, the air is sulphur free. Visitors can enjoy stirring performances of action songs and dance, followed by food cooked in a traditional hangi (in-ground oven). A visit to Mokoia Island in the centre of Lake Rotorua takes in Maori history and legends, a bird sanctuary and views from the summit. The 11 major lakes in the area make Rotorua one of the country's prime boating and trout-fishing regions. Visit the crystal-clear natural springs and gardens at Hamurana or glimpse some of the area's volcanic past at Buried Village and peaceful Lake Tarawera. Float-plane and helicopter trips to the marine volcano at White Island are popular with many departing from our hosts' properties.
