Lake Taupo - Ruapehu
spectacular scenery and adventure
The Lake Taupo - Ruapehu region owes much of it spectacular scenery to its location in an active volcanic zone. Lake Taupo (itself the size of Singapore) is the caldera (collapsed volcano) created by a series of the world's most violent and explosive eruptions, the most recent in the second century AD. Of the three mountains, Ruapehu and the classically cone-shaped Ngauruhoe are still active but do not represent a significant threat to visitors. Ruapehu offers excellent winter skiing and summer walks from both Whakapapa Village and the Ohakune side at Turoa. The third mountain is Tongariro, after which the World Heritage National Park was named, and is traversed by the Tongariro Crossing, one of the country's Great Walks. On the southern shores of Lake Taupo, Turangi and the surrounding holiday spots offer world-class fly fishing rivers, thermal pools and places to escape. Access to the Whanganui River is available at Taumarunui and Raetihi. Located in the central North Island, only a four-hour drive from Auckland and from Wellington, this region offers adventure activities, relaxation and rejuvenation opportunities plus cultural performances to suit every visitor's tastes.
