description
The discerning traveller wants choice in the range of luxury accommodation offered to them - choice between hosted stays, self-contained and full-service luxury lodges.
New Zealand's hosted city, country, beach and off-the-beaten-track stays offer a bed and breakfast service and the opportunity to get to know the Kiwi characer at close quarters. This is what distinguishes hosted accommodation from the many motels and hotels - our host's interest in and sensitivity to the needs of their guests. Always, our hosts will give of themselves and share their way of life as well as sharing their home.
Self-contained cottages, vacation apartments and holiday homes, whether in the city or country, offer the opportunity to get away for a while - to recover from or prepare for the rigours of travel, or to just relax and soak up some sun or culture.
And when it is time to luxuriate in a full-service, boutique resort, Friars Guide properties offer some of the highest standards of service available in New Zealand.
Other accommodation guides have come and gone, but Friars has been consistently successful for four reasons. First is the size and quality of the images. Second is the volume of comprehensive and informative text. Third is the use of an objective writing style where marketing puffery and superlatives are not used everywhere. Fourth is the personal recommendation of the authors which is based on a personal visit to each property - if it does not meet our minimum standards for location, building, services and amenities, and delightful hosting, then it is not accepted for inclusion in Friars Guide.

subtropical and pristine beaches
With a subtropical climate and pristine beaches, the Northland region is a natural aquatic playground. The beaches on the east coast have golden sands and gentle waters while the west coats features black iron sands and energising surf. Modern marinas and sheltered anchorages provide access to great diving, sailing and big-game fishing seas. Bush walks through ancient kauri forests and world-renowned golf courses provide the landlubber with ample recreational opportunities. Predominantly a farming and forestry area, Northland is rich in a history that links the early Maori iwi (tribes) to European settlers. Hokianga Harbour in the far north is claimed by local iwi to be where the first canoes bringing Maori settlers arrived. The area is also the location of some of the country's most significant historical events: the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document, was signed on 6 February 1840 in the Bay of Islands and New Zealand's first Christian service was held at Kerikeri in 1841. Northland has a lot to offer and a touring route driving up one coast and down the other provides a great four-day excursion
