description

The discerning traveller wants choice in the range of luxury accommodation offered to them - choice between hosted stays, self-contained and full-service luxury lodges.

New Zealand's hosted city, country, beach and off-the-beaten-track stays offer a bed and breakfast service and the opportunity to get to know the Kiwi characer at close quarters. This is what distinguishes hosted accommodation from the many motels and hotels - our host's interest in and sensitivity to the needs of their guests. Always, our hosts will give of themselves and share their way of life as well as sharing their home.

Self-contained cottages, vacation apartments and holiday homes, whether in the city or country, offer the opportunity to get away for a while - to recover from or prepare for the rigours of travel, or to just relax and soak up some sun or culture.

And when it is time to luxuriate in a full-service, boutique resort, Friars Guide properties offer some of the highest standards of service available in New Zealand.

Other accommodation guides have come and gone, but Friars has been consistently successful for four reasons. First is the size and quality of the images. Second is the volume of comprehensive and informative text. Third is the use of an objective writing style where marketing puffery and superlatives are not used everywhere. Fourth is the personal recommendation of the authors which is based on a personal visit to each property - if it does not meet our minimum standards for location, building, services and amenities, and delightful hosting, then it is not accepted for inclusion in Friars Guide.

cosmopolitan and diversity

Auckland, both a vibrant city with a population of over one million and a region of many opportunities, is a place of contrasts. The contrasts come from the number and diversity of its peoples, from its temperate climate that is moderated by proximity to two oceans, and from its geographic features. Bounded by two mountain ranges, within the Auckland region are 48 volcanic cones and three harbours with over 50 accessible islands. There are many recreational opportunities. Between the raw energy and nature reserves of the black iron sand beaches of the west coast, and the relaxing and developed golden sand beaches on the east, there are opportunities for swimming, surfing and sailing in safe waters. In the Maori language, Auckland is known as Tamaki-makau-rau - city of a hundred lovers - a name earned because all desired this jewel of an area and many have conquered it. This blend of urban development in the centre, surrounded by rural spaces and with numerous regional parks and hundreds of kilometres of picturesque coastline offers much to the traveller as they enter or leave New Zealand. We recommend a stay of at least three nights to explore this diverse region.
