description
The discerning traveller wants choice in the range of luxury accommodation offered to them - choice between hosted stays, self-contained and full-service luxury lodges.
New Zealand's hosted city, country, beach and off-the-beaten-track stays offer a bed and breakfast service and the opportunity to get to know the Kiwi characer at close quarters. This is what distinguishes hosted accommodation from the many motels and hotels - our host's interest in and sensitivity to the needs of their guests. Always, our hosts will give of themselves and share their way of life as well as sharing their home.
Self-contained cottages, vacation apartments and holiday homes, whether in the city or country, offer the opportunity to get away for a while - to recover from or prepare for the rigours of travel, or to just relax and soak up some sun or culture.
And when it is time to luxuriate in a full-service, boutique resort, Friars Guide properties offer some of the highest standards of service available in New Zealand.
Other accommodation guides have come and gone, but Friars has been consistently successful for four reasons. First is the size and quality of the images. Second is the volume of comprehensive and informative text. Third is the use of an objective writing style where marketing puffery and superlatives are not used everywhere. Fourth is the personal recommendation of the authors which is based on a personal visit to each property - if it does not meet our minimum standards for location, building, services and amenities, and delightful hosting, then it is not accepted for inclusion in Friars Guide.

stunning mountains, plains and coastline
Canterbury is a large and diverse region offering activities in the city, mountains and plains. In the north and forming the Alpine Pacific Triangle are the townships of Kaikoura, Hanmer Springs and Waipara. Where the stunning mountains meet the rugged coast at Kaikoura is an area thriving with outdoor and nature experiences. Whale watching, swimming with dolphins and seals, and diving in the clear and deep waters are popular. Follow the Inland Kaikouras route to the alpine village of Hanmer Springs, well known for its thermal springs and spas and a favourite resort area for Kiwis to relax and rejuvenate. Hanmer is just off the Lewis Pass road connecting the West Coast to Waipara, a rapidly growing wine area and with impressive limestone formations. Further south is Christchurch city, a refined blend of historical charms and stimulating city activities. Centred on Cathedral Square with the River Avon running through its heart, Christchurch is offers colourful gardens, cafés and shopping. Only one hour south, the historic French settlement of Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula is where locals relax and enjoy the charm of another culture.
