The discerning traveller wants choice in the range of luxury accommodation offered to them - choice between hosted stays, self-contained and full-service luxury lodges.
New Zealand's hosted city, country, beach and off-the-beaten-track stays offer a bed and breakfast service and the opportunity to get to know the Kiwi characer at close quarters. This is what distinguishes hosted accommodation from the many motels and hotels - our host's interest in and sensitivity to the needs of their guests. Always, our hosts will give of themselves and share their way of life as well as sharing their home.
Self-contained cottages, vacation apartments and holiday homes, whether in the city or country, offer the opportunity to get away for a while - to recover from or prepare for the rigours of travel, or to just relax and soak up some sun or culture.
And when it is time to luxuriate in a full-service, boutique resort, Friars Guide properties offer some of the highest standards of service available in New Zealand.
Other accommodation guides have come and gone, but Friars has been consistently successful for four reasons. First is the size and quality of the images. Second is the volume of comprehensive and informative text. Third is the use of an objective writing style where marketing puffery and superlatives are not used everywhere. Fourth is the personal recommendation of the authors which is based on a personal visit to each property - if it does not meet our minimum standards for location, building, services and amenities, and delightful hosting, then it is not accepted for inclusion in Friars Guide.

natural treasure of world significance
Recognised as a natural treasure of world significance, Fiordland is part of the Te Wahi Pounamu World Heritage area. The awesome beauty of this area defies description; it must be seen and experienced to fully comprehend its awe-inspiring majesty. The numberless waterfalls cascading from the green bush of the steep valleys into deep fiords, thousands of hectares of virgin forests, broad sweeps of glimmering lakes and granite peaks call for their exploration over many days. The picturesque town of Te Anau is the tourism and commercial centre of the wonderful Fiordland region and is a central base for access to Milford Sound, Lake Manapouri and Doubtful Sound. Regarded as the
sightseeing and walking capital of the world, Te Anau is a launching point for a number of the Great Walks of New Zealand including the Milford, Routeburn, Kepler and Hollyford Tracks. These multi-day hiking tracks require a reasonable level of fitness and offer a sense of freedom and oneness with nature that is seldom found in any other area of the world. The tracks can be walked either independently or fully guided.
