description

The discerning traveller wants choice in the range of luxury accommodation offered to them - choice between hosted stays, self-contained and full-service luxury lodges.

New Zealand's hosted city, country, beach and off-the-beaten-track stays offer a bed and breakfast service and the opportunity to get to know the Kiwi characer at close quarters. This is what distinguishes hosted accommodation from the many motels and hotels - our host's interest in and sensitivity to the needs of their guests. Always, our hosts will give of themselves and share their way of life as well as sharing their home.

Self-contained cottages, vacation apartments and holiday homes, whether in the city or country, offer the opportunity to get away for a while - to recover from or prepare for the rigours of travel, or to just relax and soak up some sun or culture.

And when it is time to luxuriate in a full-service, boutique resort, Friars Guide properties offer some of the highest standards of service available in New Zealand.

Other accommodation guides have come and gone, but Friars has been consistently successful for four reasons. First is the size and quality of the images. Second is the volume of comprehensive and informative text. Third is the use of an objective writing style where marketing puffery and superlatives are not used everywhere. Fourth is the personal recommendation of the authors which is based on a personal visit to each property - if it does not meet our minimum standards for location, building, services and amenities, and delightful hosting, then it is not accepted for inclusion in Friars Guide.

year-round activities and scenic marvels

In Maori, Wanaka translates as renewal of the soul, which symbolises the uplifting beauty of this area. In early Maori history, Lakes Wanaka and Hawea were summer fishing spots and rest camps for journeys to the West Coast in search of the pounamu, or greenstone, used for jewellery and weapons. Located within the Queenstown Lakes District of Central Otago, Wanaka is a charming tourist town that is a magnet to holidaymakers. In winter the skiing is supreme at the Treble Cone and Cardrona fields. And in summer the adventure activities on the lake or in Mount Aspiring National Park are outstanding. This national park extends from the dense rainforests of Fiordland to the glaciated Southern Alps with alpine meadows and river valleys in between. Over the Crown Range Road, home of the country's longest downhill bike ride (40km), Queenstown is less than one hour from Wanaka, so travellers can enjoy all of the adrenalin-packed adventure activities of the greater area from a quieter base. Many ceramics artists, jewellery makers, metal workers, photographers, fabric artists, sculptors and watercolour and oil artists have their work displayed in galleries and art trails.
