Located at the north-west corner of the South Island and with claims on having the highest number of sunshine hours in New Zealand, the Tasman region is a paradise for those who enjoy the outdoors. With the urban treats of Nelson City (see page 231), the waters of Tasman and Golden Bays and the diversity of landscapes of its three regional parks, this area offers activities aplenty. The Tasman region stretches from the northern edge of the Southern Alps across the fertile plains and out to a great sweep of golden-sand beaches bordering clear blue waters. The jewel of this area is Abel Tasman National Park, which can be explored by walking tracks and kayaks (either guided or freedom) or, for those with less time, by water taxi. You will likely see penguins and dolphins, will definitely see seals and native birds. The sub-alpine Nelson Lakes National Park and Kahurangi National Park offer a wealth of walking and tramping experiences in lush native forests. The Heaphy Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, follows a route from near Collingwood to Karamea on the West Coast. Further west, Farewell Spit is visited by over 100 species of birds each year, some migrating from Siberia and Alaska.
